Job Sizing
Job sizing ensures fairness in pay by evaluating roles within the Scottish teaching profession.
The current guidance outlines criteria and procedures for reviewing and applying job sizing measures.
Promoted Posts
Promoted post holders in schools are placed on the appropriate salary point, as determined by the job sizing process.
The process is based on a questionnaire which captures information on the responsibilities of the post and, in conjunction with whole-school information provided by the council, is used to score the job through the Job Sizing Toolkit.
- Appendix 2.2, Annex A – Questionnaire & Explanatory Notes
- Appendix 2.2, Annex B – Job size score allocations to salary spines
Where a new post is being established or a vacant post reviewed, the questionnaire should be completed by the headteacher or senior manager and signed off by the job-sizing coordinators, nominated by the Council and by the unions in each LNCT.
Job Sizing Review
A review can be triggered twice per year—either around the end of the school session (for implementation from 1 August), or in December (for implementation from 1 February).
In normal circumstances, a post can only be reviewed once every 12 months.
A review will only occur if the established review criteria—based on the Job Sizing Toolkit—are met. These should be reviewed alongside the Questionnaire and Notes of Guidance.
Principal & Depute Educational Psychologists
The Job Sizing Toolkit for these roles can be accessed here:
- Appendix 2.4, Annex A – Questionnaire & Explanatory Notes
- Appendix 2.4, Annex B – Job size point to salary point allocations
Posts will be subject to resizing if any change in responsibilities results in a change in the banding in any section of the questionnaire.
The Pay and Conditions of Service for teachers and associated professionals employed by Scottish Councils is detailed in the SNCT Handbook of Conditions of Service.
The Handbook came into effect on 1 August 2007 and replaces all previously issued SNCT Circulars.
It has been issued to LNCT Joint Secretaries.
